Grizzly Bear Viewing Main> 2010 Salmon Time Grizzly Bear Tour

September 1st through Mid-October 2012

Feasting GrizzlyMid August through until the start of winter, we operate the grizzly bear viewing at salmon rivers located deep within the inlets surround-ing the Campbell River region. Here one gets to view grizzly bears catching salmon and gorging themselves to build up the much needed body fat, to see them through the long cold winter. It is a sight to see as bears of all sizes focus on catching pacific salmon coming to their home river to spawn. So concerned with catching fish, they pay us no concern as they walk past the bear viewing tower we shall be on. Even in the bus during the short ride up from the dock, we often see the bears fishing or walking through the forest.

Bears viewing the salmonYou will be amazed and humbled to see such large crea-tures so close. Most days we may view about a half dozen bears at the river observation towers, but some days one can view over twenty! It is so grand to see two big boys arguing over the prime areas to fish from, and sometimes you will even hear their deep growls and roars. Very sel-dom do they expel valuable energy to fight, but when they do the fur sure fly's. Most times they just amble by one another giving each other room, for the river is usu-ally teaming with hundreds of salmon, with plenty for all.

Mamma Bear and her three cubs
At the river, we often get to witness mothers with their cubs. They look so cute, but that all comes to an abrupt end once mom catches a salmon, for the entire family tears at the fish trying to get their share and more. This is when one really hears the roaring and growling of grizzly bears. You know you are close, when one can hear the bears crunching upon the salmons’ bones as they eat their share.

The Homalco First Nation operates the grizzly bear viewing operation that we work with. Located half way up Butte Inlet on the Orford River, one truly gets to experience the bears in their natural wild habitat. One of the greatest parts of viewing bears here, is being able to hear their perspective of the grizzly bear based upon their two unique cultures. Tom is a Kwak-waka’wakw, but it is nice to see two totally different First Nations groups working together to show grizzly bears to the world on their level.

Homalco GuideThe Homalco First Nation have been conducting grizzly bear tours for almost a decade at the Orford River. Their guides are well trained, and are very eager to share with you many things about the grizzly bears, that most never get to hear about. You will come to understand that most guides work almost year round out in their traditional ter-ritories in forestry projects, or their Tribes salmon en-hancement program. So your choice of taking one of our tours, also contributes to helping the regions environ-mental efforts conducted by the Homalco First Nation, for a portion of your fee goes to them.

EagleCraft boatThe Salmon Time Grizzly Bear Tour is one of the most unique grizzly bear adventures in all of British Columbia. You will journey deep into the Homalco People’s traditional territories with an aboriginal captain on a new comfortable EagleCraft vessel. Seeing mountains towering up from the emerald green glacial waters of Butte Inlet, you will come to understand that you chose the right tour company to journey with.River interaction
