Mothership Adventures | Spring Bear Mothership Adventure

Bears at riverSpring on our coast the bears awake from a winters sleep, and they have one thing on their mind, eat, eat, and eat some more. Seeing as the beaches of British Columbia in many regions offer some of the highest concentrations of protein per square meter at low tide on earth, the beaches are where to find bears. Black bears and grizzly bears can be seen by the dozen on most days. When the tide is high they move to the fresh grasses along the shore and throughout the estuaries.

Eagle watching for salmonSpring is such an abundant time, that we generally see a black bear or two along with many marine mammals within the first two hours of leaving the Campbell River dock. If you are a bird watching enthusiast, then you will be busy enjoying the diversity of birds during the entire journey. If you are interested in history, then being aboard the M.V. Pacific Faith is like being on a passage through time, as you see and hear about the region.

Seine NetCaptain Harold Sewid who is also a Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) Clan Hereditary Chief will keep you entertained with his stories about the inner passage of Vancouver Island. Being a commercial fishing captain for over 40 years, he is a wealth of information about the region and the rest of the British Columbia coast. You will sure to be enthralled with his countless commercial fishing exploits, for he is a gifted story teller.

I, Tom Sewid shall be on every Mothership Adventure that Aboriginal Adventures Canada does, so you shall be able to have me educate, entertain and mesmerize all with my narrations. I shall share our family legends and historical stories of our people. A gifted historian of our region and the Kwakwaka’wakw people, I shall be able to allow you to understand what our world has been like for our People since the dawn of our creations.

Abandoned Indian VillageNumerous abandoned Indian village sites and ancient harvest sites shall be explored, where hundreds of meters of beaches are painted white from countless meals of clam by our ancestors. These shell beaches offer great excursions off the boat, and one will even see ancient rock carvings called petro-glyphs. Who knows, one may even be able to find a glass trade bead brought with the first wave of traders and explorers to our coast? Then again, one may find an ancient artifact, that we like to be donated to one of our cultural museums.

We shall demonstrate numerous fishing techniques, and if you are a seafood lover, then you shall have the adventure of a lifetime sampling many of the delicacies that abound throughout the waters. Every trip we shall go ashore and cook for you a salmon the traditional way against an open fire, where the fish is held on cedar sticks. This Kwakwaka’wakw delicacy shall also be accompanied with other fresh traditional fare. If you are not a seafood eater, not to worry, for our cooks shall also supply what ever suits your tastes.

Using the main vessel, tender boats, or sea kayaks upon request, we shall ensure that you get unforgettable wildlife viewing opportunities. Shore excursions will be conducted at all sorts of unique areas with interesting things to see. One just never knows what they will see throughout the five day adventure into our world.

ShipwreckAncestors

Tom Sewid once was a commercial hunting guide, and is very experienced and qualified to guide you when in bear environment. All times ashore, or when clients are kayaking in close proximity to bears on beaches, a firearm shall be present, but out of sight. We aboriginals don’t like to harm the bears, but guns are the best noisemaker if the need should arise to turn a bear. Remember, we are going out into the true wilds of British Columbia, and it’s bush rules out there in regard to bear behavior. Bear spray is a good back-up, but with a 50% failure rate on bears, that is too much of a gamble for our clients.

This Mothership Adventure tour operates April, May, & June 2010. The M.V. Pacific Faith is a very comfortable boat with separate staterooms for double occupancy. Children are more than welcome, and each stateroom has children's bunks. There are two heads (bathrooms) with tub, shower, and sink aboard ship. There is a maximum of 10 clients per trip overall. Please for the itinerary, dates and price for this package.
